They met on the dock
for the very last time.
Turning around to face him
upon his arrival,
she spoke the words that
sliced through his heart.
“We can’t see each other anymore.”
He crossed the threshold of
empty space between them,
interlacing his fingers with hers.
Looking into those gorgeous deep
brown eyes that he had come to know so well,
he silently probed for the reasons why.
She let go of his hands and took a step back,
turning her head to look out over the water.
The lake surface was still;
quite the opposite of her wildly beating heart.
Glancing at him and noticing his crestfallen face,
the apology fell from her lips.
“I am so sorry.”
He reached up to catch
a loose tendril of her hair and
tucked it in its home behind her ear.
His hazel eyes, now brimming with tears,
searched for any semblance that would have this
make an ounce of sense.
Quickly scanning the memories of their past,
he saw small signs of her creating distance
between them.
At the time, he had thought nothing of it,
since their affection for each other had not
waned,
still overflowing into the tiny cracks that had begun to form.
“But I’m falling in love with you,” he whispered.
At his admittance, her eyes widened in shock,
for she too, felt the same.
“We can’t,” she sighed.
“It’s forbidden.”
Stepping towards her, he enveloped her in a
bone-crushing hug.
“I miss you already.”
Now it was her turn for the tears to form,
already wracked with agony
and had already begun missing him from the
moment
she made the decision to
part ways.
All she wanted to do was melt into his embrace
and sob with grief for all of their futures
that would never come to pass.
Convincing herself that this was necessary
to avoid long-term pain,
was a difficult feat indeed.
Even though she knew in her heart that
he loved her immensely,
there sat in her soul,
her little niggle of intuition,
that he would not leave his beloved,
for her.
And that was the catalyst fueling this
sudden
ending.
