Outside.

A romantic villanelle.

Outside, the merry orchids are in bloom,

Growing by the little house on the little hill -

As I catch your cheery eye across the room.

/

Below the hill there was a bubbly flume,

Feeding grass in the meadow to its fill.

Outside, the merry orchids are in bloom.

/

Outside, the jovial sun dispels the gloom.

But it’s the inside that causes my heart to mill,

As I catch your cheery eye across the room.

/

Blue eyes, brighter than you could assume,

Like the calm, tepid waters of an ocean still.

Outside, the merry orchids are in bloom.

/

Outside, bees search for nectar to consume.

But they cannot match the joy that you instill,

As I catch your cheery eye across the room.

/

If only life were like this, no need to resume

the vain pursuits that so often fail to fulfil.

Outside, the merry orchids are in bloom;

As I catch your cheery eye across the room.
