our fear jumped like magic

right up, out of the dark

almost talismanic

fireworks without spark

and we cheered and applauded

like there was some kind of show

a celebration never started

sequencing without a row

up became down

and common sense disappeared

you smiled as I frowned

I could see it in your ears

it started under your eyes

moving to the bridge of your nose

it came as no surprise

it traveled up from your toes

so contagious, in fact, I couldn’t fight it

and before I could stop

my frown reconfigured a bit

now curving at the top

talismanic, who’d have guessed that

the magic of a moment

in near seconds flat

the bad wasn’t so important

but that’s what we do

we get lost in our thoughts

let the darkness get through

until it shadows the heart

and our hope and our dreams

get lost in the maze we’ve created

trying to float boats upstream

wondering why we’re so frustrated

joy was there all along

followed closely by its magic

beautiful notes to a song

but it takes a brave heart to sing it
