Our Future

A poem

A re-animated body

bursting out from the depths

of a barely charged computer.

-

Sparks around the darkened room until

the power goes out.

-

With repeating thuds, those doomsdays grow nearer

with quiet threats

of extinction for all.

-

We ignore them, searching for the needle

placed by a shadow

at the bottom of ten haystacks.

-

Dark clouds tiptoe closer, dragging the promise

of an endless storm by rusting chain.

But we do not notice

through our sunglasses and tinted windows.

-

I draw the blinds and hit the floor, exhausted.

-

You finish work and do the same, before leaving.

-

They promised us everything, we gave our lives for this,

and here we sit, like dolls,

with glazed-over eyes and hollow bodies

waiting for some God, some hero, to deliver us.

-

The lightbulb burns itself out,

we are plunged back into darkness

there’s blood inside my wallet,

and the bed is still unmade.
