The Hardest Core

this can’t be real, I think

when faced with the ground breaking apart

beneath my feet when I have

no chance to turn back around

or flee in a new direction

but somehow there’s still some part of me

built of solid stone

even more solid than brick and mortar

that isn’t snapping or breaking

because that part of me

crafted from pure osmium

even more tested and true

than a shining diamond

that’s gone a little bit insane

that osmium core

stays intact

because I’ve done this before

I’ve been thrown down

face first

into the dirt

so many times before
