Opposing hearts

Ice and fire

He can not feel it through the icy wall he's constructed; he's grown numb with the cold. Her hot breath in his ear, whispering promises of hope, can not penetrate his fortress. Her oath of perseverance grows wilted from her tears, the salty stains marring the surface and making it unclean.

With time, she hoped, he would realize the truth in her heated words. But each effort, instead, yields another icy block, melting just enough to reinforce the strength of the wall as it freezes once again. He is lost. He is lost to her. A vagabond, wandering through a snowy desert bearing the load he carries alone, heavy with the fodder of self preservation and solitude.

She denies his cold shoulder and seeks the rays of the glorious sun of joy, fearful that if she resists it her own icy wall may form. She will bask in the life giving rays and let the icy tears melt as they fall away and cleanse her of his frozen poison. Her smile is forced against the cold but she pushes it forth with the warmth she feels deep her in her heart; love for her own self.

She glances sideways from time to time to offer his shadow respite with her lighted smile. But the glow is only softly lit yet and can not spare it's radiance to such a darkened hue. And he knows not the value of such warmth, as the cold has been his company for so many years, he finds comfort in its lonesome embrace.

Never will he know the sort of lovely secrets held in a sun's ray as it dances in her heart and exits through her breath. And never can she fathom the comfort of his icy wall, bidding lonely hearts to feel no more as they rest, so weary from their effort.
