Onions are gross

You caramelize them and they’re slimy

You don’t and they’re vengeful

They assault you with disgust

They make you cry

— Even after you’ve cut them

Once I cried

— Knowing my parents forced me to eat them

They were ashamed that I picked them out

— Even though it runs in the eldest daughters of the maternal line

Only keeping them around for frijoles

But then my Nana doesn’t even use them for that

Keeping them in the fridge to provide

— A sense of normalcy for everyone else

no one eats at my place anyway

So what's the point of eating onions

— Of allowing them their slimy space on my tongue

If no one else feels them there anyway

Why let myself eat for the pleasure of others
