One Work: The Moscow Scream
Modern meme based on Munch's Scream

Ukraine's missile hit
Moscow's oil refinery
Panic, screams on tape
Author's note: This was written for Raymond Taylor's One Work challenge. As I can't avoid the political because Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine is defining my life, I immediately thought of the meme that I came across so many times after Ukraine hit an oil refinery near Moscow with its new Flamingo missile. Here's the original photograph of the event the meme is referring to:

Another connection I made from Raymond's challenge is to the art of Alesha Stupin, a dissident political cartoonist who uses the Scream theme a lot in his cartoons. This one below refers to the Kerch (Black Sea) environmental disaster in Russia in 2024, when an oil spill was so bad oil literally got into people's houses.

And for the third, a more recent example of Trump's war in Iran:

Raymond in his One Work challenge stated that The Scream is misunderstood from its original intent. Munch himself explained that this is a painting of self-reflection and empathy, a realization of the horror resulting from human impact on the environment we are killing. I think the value of this painting is that it's so open to interpretation that you can apply it to any man-made disaster, including wars.
