One Step From The Next

Lyric

By Julie O'Hara - Author, Poet and Spiritual WarriorPublished 3 days ago • 1 min read

[Verse 1]
Some days I wake with my jaw clenched tight,
Coffee gone cold by the kitchen sink.
The whole damn day feels twice its size,
And I can't find the first thing to think.
[Pre-Chorus]
I'm scared, I'm angry, I'm out of my depth,
No bright little answer, no plan in my hand.
I take one breath, then another one yet,
And do what I can where I stand.
[Chorus]
I don't always feel strong.
Sometimes I shake, sometimes I swear.
Sometimes I don't know what comes next,
Or how I'm supposed to get there.
But when the floor gives way beneath me,
And I can't see past the mess,
I find one small thing I can do,
And I do that next.
[Verse 2]
I missed the call, let the dishes pile,
Sat in my coat on the edge of the bed.
Then I fed the cat, opened the blinds,
Put both feet down and lifted my head.
[Pre-Chorus]
No grand revelation, no sudden relief,
Just a little room made out of the day.
I don't have to know what tomorrow will bring,
To take one step anyway.
[Chorus]
I don't always feel strong.
Sometimes I shake, sometimes I swear.
Sometimes I don't know what comes next,
Or how I'm supposed to get there.
But when the floor gives way beneath me,
And I can't see past the mess,
I find one small thing I can do,
And I do that next.
[Bridge]
Maybe brave is the hand on the tap,
The glass filled up, the curtains drawn.
Maybe it's telling the truth out loud:
I'm not okay, but I'm still here now.
[Final Chorus]
I don't always feel strong.
Sometimes I'm scared and full of spite.
Sometimes I haven't got a clue,
But I can make it through tonight.
When the floor gives way beneath me,
I don't need the whole road blessed.
I find one small thing I can do,
And I do that next.
[Outro]
One breath, then another.
One step, then the next.
