Once Upon a Stepmother

The Making of a Villain

By Laura RoodenburgPublished 4 months ago • 1 min read

I am not your mother

And I don’t claim to be

We share the same last name

That makes us family

I am not your mother

No image to defend

Ignoring the hypocrisy

It’s easier to pretend

I am not your mother

A blessing in disguise

Clearly, you know everything

I’m too old to be wise

I am not your mother

But I’ll turn this car around

Forever at an impasse

There is no common ground

I am not your mother

The distance isn’t cheap

I’ll simply tell your father

Neither of us will sleep

I am not your mother

Still, it’s hard to look away

When choices turn to consequences

From the stupid games you play

I am not your mother

Which makes me sick inside

To know that I can’t help you

Despite how much I’ve tried

I am not your mother

Where would I begin?

Does loving you mean losing

When we both could win?

I am not your mother

That’s what hurts the most

Domestic isolation

A wicked, caring ghost

Familyfact or fiction
