Once A Mistake, Twice A Choice

That’s the end of the road

The heart breaks, unstemmed bleeding, irreversible pain,

Grief slides over, gripping the heart in a crushing hug,

Pulsation radiating through every limb; muscle memory,

Rippling through the veins, carried in the blood.

**

The mind begs for a break , instigating forgiveness,

A terrible mistake, a lesson not learnt,

The question ‘why’ asked over and over again,

The emotions curling away, forever burnt.

**

The stress tightens every single muscle; contracting,

Aches and pains reside in the depths of torrent despair,

The headache throbs in time to the racing heartbeats,

An attempt to accept the fact that there is no more care.

**

Sleep is sacrificed to the loss, no understanding yet visible,

Worry and anxiety thwarts the once coveted hopes and dreams,

Nightmares revolve upon the darkest of hours,

Reminding the heart that nothing is guaranteed, it seems.

**

The tears pool in a never ending waterfall of anguish,

Dehydration tipping the scales to silent sobs,

Determination to ride the waves, build upon the strength,

Disappears in a fit of hopelessness that robs.

**

Shock and disbelief sits upon shoulders of incredibility,

Conviction hidden in dubious denial,

Refusal riddles the daylight hours,

The heartbreak hidden behind a deceiving smile.

**

Then it happens a second time, it was no mistake,

Deliberate cruelty rides the last accepting wave,

The knife doesn’t cut so deeply the second time round,

Not after knowing it was a deliberate behave.

**

Slowly the truth seeps through the pores,

The blood moves the validity into the broken heart,

Where it stagnates; the killer of love, forgiveness, hope,

And shatters the promise never to part.

**

Time allows the betrayal to ease just slightly,

The corners of the duplicity blunted, rubbed smooth,

The resilience of the wounded heart flounders,

Until it beats in a pattern that actually soothes.

**

Once is devastating, twice is unforgivable,

The door now slams shut; bolted and locked,

Memories enclosed into a buried chamber,

The trust and love now forever blocked.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

"Once is devastating, twice is unforgivable". That line is sooooo true!
