On This Very Special Day
Sometimes, all we have on this very special day is the memory of when it was special.
I.
Valentines is coming.
Just a few days away.
Loving hands awaits a dozen roses
while lovers anticipate sweet things.
Sweet words in cards or
Chocolates truffles
in cute, little, heart-shaped boxes.
II.
Some will get engaged
with diamond-studded rings.
Others seek
their first kiss,
for love is all the rage
on this very special day.
III.
Everybody’s happy
Everybody’s fine.
This day goes forth
on this very special day.
IV.
And here I am,
alone with memories.
For that very special day
Is now the past.
V.
Once I had
roses to give
and sweet things in
Cards and boxes.
Once I had silver and gold
and treasure galore
to shower my one true love.
On that very special day.
V.
She made my day,
With a kiss and hug
She made my day
When she softly said,
“You made my day.”
VI.
Even when she moved
hundred miles away.
And the phone was our way.
The roses,
the candy
and the cards
kept coming her way
on that very special day.
VII
And like a blind fool
There was nothing I wouldn't do
for my one true love.
I needed her sweet words
and joy,
for the distance made days long
except on
that very special day.
VIII.
I never expected much from her.
I did all the work for her.
No need for thanks
Her pretty voice on the phone
made things swell.
IX.
I loved her with all my heart,
even as the distance between
soon broke us apart.
For I loved so much
and she....just liked me.
X.
I've tried to paint a pretty picture,
as plainly as you can see,
of a nowhere relationship
built on "ifs" and "maybes."
Some will say I was stringed along,
Some will say that she held on
to something that wasn’t there.
XI.
Just as I held on for reasons quite the same.
It was love devoured by lives lived far
from a distance that became a vast sea.
My one true love
soon it became a vanquished love.
And now somebody gives her
roses, cards, chocolates and
Jewelry galore.
It's just not me.
XII.
And every year,
I’m reminded of all I did
for nothing in return
on that very special day.
XIII.
Sometimes I wonder what she's doing.
Sometimes I wonder if I'll talk to her another time
Sometimes I wonder if I'll be a sucker for that again,
on that very special day.
XIV.
Valentines is coming.
And I think I'll miss this one.
I have fond memories,
but that’s all I have
on this very special day.
