Choose friends not by the glitter of their gold,

Nor by the laughter ringing in the hall;

But seek the heart that faithfully is bold,

To lift your spirit lest you stumble and fall.

Beware the voice that praises when you thrive,

Yet vanishes when fortunes start to wane;

The loyal soul is he who helps you strive,

And shares the shelter in the pouring rain.
