Old Rocking Chair

Lessons to be Learned

The old woman sat in her old rocking chair,

Her hands coarse and crinkled with time.

And there in her arms lay a babe in her care,

An example of a greater design.

Five tiny fingers, soft and smooth, found their mark

Round the thumb of the old woman’s hand.

And there formed a sight both perfect and stark,

An example of God’s wondrous plan.

In that old rocking chair in a dimly lit room,

An image emerged, clear and bright.

An unbreakable bond, love in full bloom,

Took shape and made everything right.

The hard edges of life were soon washed away

By the baby held close to her heart.

My grandma and daughter both owned this day,

Smooth sailing right from the start.

A lesson to learn - love is the key,

We can change this hard world one by one.

Hack away at all hate, start with just you and me

And not quit ‘til we get the job done.

There are potholes in life at most every turn,

We can smooth them all out if we care.

Just open our eyes - and I think we can learn,

From the scene in that old rocking chair.
