Ode to the Dust Bunny

Motes of Note

By Gerard DiLeoPublished 3 years ago • Updated 3 years ago • 1 min read

I see you as you run

For your fuzzy little life

Into the corner, every time

The AC kicks on

You roll and drift and fraternize with the other bunnies

Mingling your innards and outards

Creating bigger, more menacing ones

Fuzz happens.

To the tumbleweed of urbia and suburbia

I salute you

***

You go where the wind takes you

And my vents blow you

Invisible, under me

You fear the vacuum

That sends you to Limbo

Like all the unbaptized babies

Unfinished business and

Unswept leftovers

Of the day's goings-on

Archived along the baseboard

***

Your anatomy: a time capsule

Of insect parts of small beings

Who lived entire insect lives

Droppings from mice and bugs and god-knows-what else

That report you are what you ate, yesterday

Lint from navels and opposing cheeks

Crumbs passed over by others

The dead skin and DNA from a hundred hundred species

And me, scratched off casually in the night

You are the library and depository of all life uncategorized

***

You're the monster

Under my bed

Who doesn't scare me with your insect parts

Disgusting filth

And remnants of lives lived and lost

But I do fear you

Because one day

At the end of me

You and parts of what were me

Shall finally meet.
