October: The Place Where Autumn Waits
There is a road that appears only in October, and if you follow it, the season opens its door

There is a road
that appears in October.
You will know it
by the leaves.
They gather across the pavement
in rust,
gold,
copper,
the colors of old letters
no one has answered.
Follow them.
At the end of the road
you will find a gate
that was not there in September.
It opens without a sound.
Beyond it,
October.
You step inside
and the air changes.
It smells of woodsmoke,
wet earth,
apples split open beneath trees,
and rain
waiting somewhere beyond the hills.
The afternoon is already tired.
Here,
the sun goes home early.
Porch lights bloom
before dinner.
Windows glow amber
behind curtains.
Every house seems warm.
Every house seems to remember you.
Keep walking.
You will pass a field
where scarecrows lean
against the wind
as though listening.
You will hear leaves
scraping across empty roads.
A crow will call
from the roof of a barn.
Somewhere in the distance,
someone is splitting wood.
Somewhere closer,
a kettle begins to sing.
You will want to knock
on one of the doors.
Don't.
Not yet.
First,
walk toward the forest.
October keeps its oldest things there.
The path is soft beneath your feet.
Moss covers the stones.
Branches touch overhead,
turning the sky
into a narrow ribbon of gray.
The deeper you go,
the quieter it becomes.
No birds.
No traffic.
Only your footsteps
and the occasional fall
of a single leaf.
Then you reach a clearing.
There is a bonfire.
No one tends it.
Still,
it burns.
Orange light moves
over the surrounding trees.
A wooden chair waits
beside the fire.
You sit.
For a while,
nothing happens.
And that is the gift.
October does not ask you
to hurry.
It lets the world
become quiet.
It lets old memories
walk beside you.
A childhood kitchen.
A sweater left
on the back of a chair.
A hand you once held.
A voice
you thought you had forgotten.
Here,
even lost things
seem to have somewhere to go.
Night arrives.
The stars appear
one at a time.
You hear bells
far beyond the forest.
You turn.
Between the trees,
a road is glowing
beneath the moon.
The road home.
You stand.
The fire behind you
crackles once.
You look back.
The chair is empty.
The forest is waiting.
You begin walking.
At the gate,
you stop.
Beyond it lies November.
You can already feel
the colder air.
The bare branches.
The longer nights.
The world preparing
to let go.
You look back
at October.
At the amber windows.
The wet leaves.
The distant smoke.
The road beneath the trees.
For one moment,
you understand something:
October was never
a place you visited.
It was a place
that remembered you.
The gate begins to close.
You step through.
And behind you,
somewhere beyond the leaves,
October waits
with the door unlocked.
