The month I was born

I joined the world as it was dying

Awakened to a chill in the morning air

The scent of charred wood in a breeze

Funny how the swan song is so lovely

And somehow still so lonely

The dampness resting atop your skin

As you walk along a dirt road

Gravel carries you along a path

Not travelled any longer

Sunlight fades early

Shadows grip the edges of the trees

The sound of a creek bed bubbling

Surface of the water covered in golden leaves

A wooden bridge made of ties

From an abandoned train track

The evening brings a crispness

Every snapping branch gives goosebumps

The beauty of the calico forest

The laughter of children down the street

Late night movies under blankets

Popcorn chewed in frantic panic

Eyes go wide and then tighten shut

Corn field mazes on midnight drive

Caramel apples, sticky fingers

How does a dying month feel so alive?
