Warmth and Dread

Creaking as it opens,

Rolling into hot gingerbread,

Fire crackling, logs playing tokens

Of gently crisping warmth, or dread?

Moving to the tune of frantic mourner,

Shadows lie in wait at every corner,

Nook and cranny, chill spine tingling,

Soft predator of nights, eyes dangling?

There. The blackness without draws unto,

Soot shaded face of the dark anew,

The firelight flickering, to no avail,

Shadows bleeding  from the embers hail.

There. Fanged feline of fire, blazing hot eyes,

Shadow cloaked, coiled unseen it lies,

Coal hot sunken orbs, skin ablaze,

Fixed am I by its withering gaze.

Dread hold whispers carried by warm ember lit air.

Why does it wait for me there?
