O Captain, Our Captain

A villanelle about legendary Nordiques/Avalanche captain Joe Sakic

By Clyde E. DawkinsPublished about a month ago 1 min read

He wore the C like armor, quiet Joe Sakic,

A wrist shot through the winter, clean and cold and true.

In Denver’s thin air, legends learn to breathe magic.

Draft day Burnaby kid, no headline theatrics,

Just points and patience while the Nordiques turned to new.

He wore the C like armor, quiet Joe Sakic.

The Cup in ’96, the sweep — no need for panic,

Then 2001, the handoff to Ray Bourque.

In Denver’s thin air, legends learn to breathe magic.

Two Olympics, golden goals — not loud, not frantic,

A leader’s math: he’d subtract doubt, add two.

He wore the C like armor, quiet Joe Sakic.

No tantrums, only backchecks, shifts made from granite,

A Hall of Fame built on what he wouldn’t do.

In Denver’s thin air, legends learn to breathe magic.

So raise a banner for the man they called Titanic

Not for the iceberg, but for how he cut right through.

He wore the C like armor, quiet Joe Sakic,

In Denver’s thin air, legends learn to breathe magic.
