Number One
Look After Number One
All my life people have told me
You've got to look after Number One,
You've got to come first in everything
And you do what has to be done.
But never in my life have I done this
Because that is not who I am,
I spend all my time trying
Not to hurt anyone if I can.
I know, you don't have to tell me
That I'll always end off worse,
Because I put everyone else before me
I've had a lot of broken hearts to nurse.
My life will always be a long way from happy
But I don't see how I can change,
I would find it hard to live with myself
If for your unhappiness I was to blame.

About the Creator
Colleen Millsteed
My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
