Nows and Thens
An old man sitting alone at the end of life
My nows become thens;
My thens become whens;
Till the day I no longer recall -
How many thens and whens
Came before the fall.
Teeth in a jar next to the sink;
Blanket tucked ‘round, I sit and think.
Dinner just came out of a blender.
Someone delivered it. Who was the sender?
Not sure what’s in it. I guess it’s okay.
After all, I gotta eat something anyway
It’s just bland paste, no taste left.
My love of food, as life, torn, bereft.
My cat is fine, she’s furry and sweet;
Curled up there purring on my feet.
She’s not much of a talker, more of a stalker.
Scratches up the tennis balls on legs of my walker.
Maybe my kids will visit this week.
A little companionship is all I seek.
I know they’re busy with jobs and life.
Dealing each with their own personal strife.
Still, it would be nice to see my grandkids again.
I forget their names. Is that such a sin?
Forgotten here in this drafty old house,
Only gift my cat’s recently killed mouse
Need to use the bathroom. Hip’s acting up.
Nobody to notice should I just pee in a cup.
Anyone who cared is long ago gone.
So I sit in this chair and stare at the dawn.
One final houseguest I know shall soon call.
Perhaps that’s Him I hear in the hall.
Welcome He shall be in this dark old room.
Finally, I can rise from loneliness and gloom.
