Nothing pleases me

The Restless Journey

By Ahmed HatimyPublished 2 years ago • 1 min read

says a passenger on the bus – not the radio,

nor the morning newspapers, nor the castles on the hills.

I want to cry,

the driver says: Wait until we reach the station,

and cry alone as much as you can.

A lady says: Me too. Nothing pleases me.

I pointed out my grave to my son,

and he liked it and slept, without bidding me farewell.

The university student says: Nor do I. Nothing pleases me.

I studied archaeology without finding identity in the stones.

Am I really me?

And a soldier says: Me too. Nothing pleases me.

I always besiege a ghost

that besieges me.

The nervous driver says: Here we are,

approaching our final stop, so get ready to get off...

And they scream: We want beyond the station,

so keep going!

But I say: Drop me off here. I, like them,

am not pleased by anything, but I am tired of the journey.
