Nothing in My Pockets
I walked along the cold, wet street,
With empty hands and tired feet,
The world went past without a care,
While I had nothing, nowhere to fare.
I searched my pockets once again,
But all I found was crumbs and pain,
A worn old tissue and a key,
But nothing there for you or me.
The shop windows shone with things I'd love,
But we can't buy what's not enough,
I turn away with a heavy heart,
Knowing we'll have to do without.
The heating's low, the cupboards bare,
We make do with what we have to share,
A simple meal, a cup of tea,
And hope that things will better be.
The bills keep coming, one by one,
While there's no money, none at all,
I lie awake and worry through the night,
And pray for a brighter, kinder light.
But still we smile, we stick together,
Through stormy days and any weather,
For love is richer than gold can buy,
And that's the treasure that gets us by.
We dream of days when life is kind,
When worries ease and peace we find,
A little home, a little more,
So we can give and not feel poor.
So here's to hope, we'll not give in,
We'll keep on trying, we'll begin,
For pockets may be empty now,
But brighter days will come somehow.
