Nothing Happened Yet
That feeling you just can't describe

Why the hell do I
panic before the kettle
has even boiled yet?
My hands grip the cold counter
like it might leave without me
The kettle clicks once and I hate myself a little for hearing it. I check the back door, then check it again like the first version of me was not a reliable witness. Nothing has happened, but something old in me has already lowered its head.
Nothing happened yet.
Still, my chest leaves without me,
coat on, keys in hand.
I stay beside the kettle,
hearing the water not boil.
