Walkill River, NY
I saw a leg on the side of the road.
Well, a haunch of venison, with a hoof,
the pelt and head nearby.
It got me thinking about the way men kill things
and serve them up as news, or dinner.
How often they simply let things go to waste.
Thinking about where to draw the line for caring,
about intentional killing and accidental killing,
about the value of life, and the value of death
and where the roles of thanks and sorrow take their
mark in all of it.
Even God stayed the hand of Abraham and
took a sheep instead,
but still,
the idea was served up as news.
