NOT TODAY
The Backwards Door Moves Forward
“Not Today”
The lady’s lips curled like a curse.
Her eyes squinched tight, possessed by something bitter.
She pointed sharp, jagged, relentless
at the old woman with long pink hair,
who sat calmly, eating chocolate-covered gummies,
Halloween sweetness melting into memory.

The air thickened.
The words came, venomous and familiar:
“You always ruin everything. You’re too much. You’re wrong.”
But the old woman didn’t flinch.
She chewed slowly, swallowed truth,
and said, with sovereign grace:
“Not today.”
She rose.
She walked through the backwards door
into a land of cherry popsicles and hot chocolate,
where no finger pointed,
and every curl of the lip was a smile.
The door creaked back, the silence spoke,
A candy grin, a memory choked.

Footsteps echo, truth will not hide
The mask remembers who has died.
Undo the night, rewind the scream,
This treat was born inside a dream.
