Not Every Map Is Drawn In Colour
On White Cane Safety Day, a journey through sound, touch and the quiet confidence of finding one's own way.

Today is White Cane Safety Day, so we celebrate the achievements of people with visual challenges.
Many know the way better than we think.
They don't need to see every turn to know the path.
The morning speaks as footsteps click
Engines sing their hurried songs;
“Tap, tap,” the pavement speaks
A slim, white companion moves on.
Coffee whispers from the corner cafe,
A breeze brushes softly ‘gainst her cheek;
The pavement offers clues to the cane
And its slow attempts to seek.
A hand reaches before she asks
Extends to help, steps she does not lose;
She calmly states she knows the task
That the path is hers to choose.
“Tap, tap,” she turns the known lane,
Freedom written on the stones
Each step decided by her cane
And a mind all her own.
The cane in sight, she knew the way
Not every map in colour drawn;
It guides her steps; she does not stray
Far from the black; she will move on.
