NOSTALGIA FIRE

another day, another poem about longing for the past

By angela hepworthPublished about a year ago • 1 min read
“Nostalgia” by Nelya Shenklyarska

tug, relentless, at these bars

whirlpool memories, shooting stars

sparkling light strikes as worlds fly

past the apple of my eye

sweeter, dearer days of old

days the gods had once foretold

times we never celebrated

until we were inundated

stop the mad descent back down

to a smaller, kinder town

back to pieces of the self

unmarred once upon a shelf

books and toys and dreams to come

days and weeks and years to run

youth’s relentless, as we know

time is fierce, even more so

revert back, my history

glorious beams and turning keys

the shade of a willow tree

beautiful discoveries

with age comes a clever mind

paranoia won’t quite find

a way within these elder walls

to make its way when duty calls

and we go running, as we do

into a new day, morning dew

upon our dank and tired faces

we have seen too many places

we have seen too many things

we know now all what life brings

pain and sadness, hurt and sneers

even as the dark road clears

living in a world worth fearing

has our hopes all disappearing

and our love diminished, dark

apathetic faces stark

repulsion, all towards the self

silent smiles and calls for help

wishing to go back in time

save ourselves the long recline

of searching for new meaning here

for some, more life is death, my dear
