Not a Hero

No one wants to die a hero

When they can live a nobody

They sacrifice you

make you a saint

tell your story to the children

who can’t escape

They make you a hero

by taking your life

ending your reign

of being and choice

It’ll never happen again

they say

as they tear down your image

and lay waste to your home

Be a nobody

a life well lived

out of the spotlight

of bigots and fiends

Because a nobody to them

is a somebody to us.
