No More Child's Play
Don't Turn Around
I'm an adult
With battle scars to prove it
Physical scars,
Emotional ones too.
Behind me are the days of innocence
When I was cared for
Loved
Coddled
Rather than the one offering care.
Allowed to play,
To roam,
To wander and wonder.
How easy things were
When big decisions were
Where to explore,
Whose imagination to tap,
Which parents to approach for snacks
Fun and games
Are not as they were
In Once Upon a Time time
But have shifted
No more jump ropes, swings, hopscotch
The musical soundtrack has also transformed
Children's tunes have faded,
Replaced with deeper, lyrical tunes.
I'm an adult
Childish things are behind me,
But occasionally, they're not beneath me.
