No Heroes

Determining who you are for yourself

By Donny FoleyPublished 6 months ago • 1 min read

I never had any heroes, at least not in the sense that I see in media or hear from my friends

They all have heroes who helped them in real life, made a difference somewhere, are masters at their craft, etc.

But I never had anyone like that, not even my own parents

Don't get me wrong, I love and respect them but I wouldn't call them my heroes

I love writing but I don't have any writer I look up to really

I love art but it's same story

I think having a hero is respectable but not worth it

You have this one (maybe a few) person in your head or in your life that you try to model yourself after but you cannot and will never be them so it is a futile effort

I'm not saying you can't take ideas or motivations or beliefs from people, of course you can it's natural for us to immitate others

But that's the difference, every person is different and no matter how hard you try to be that person it will never happen because you have lived different lives

So instead I think it's much more noble and worthwhile to become your own hero

Create your own moral code

Be the person your childhood self needed in times of trouble

Be the person your angsty, "I hate the world", teenage self would have respected

Be the person the world needs because that's what every hero is, someone the world needs
