With your makeshift handle you
sealed shut the door separating
what you were and would be
stuffed into a box of dials
alone in the stratosphere
waiting to ride
Glamorous Glennis into history
and never really come back
sitting on top of a
rocket engine loaded with
ethyl alcohol, water, liquid oxygen
waiting to ignite an
orange streak exploding out of the sun
like an errant flame
licking clouds 45,000 feet over
the Mojave where mortals watched
as your broken ribs danced
to the tune of 700 miles per hour
winning the race against sound
moving through a distance that
momentarily ceased to exist
sending a scream across the air
carrying a message heard
that you were forever
the fastest man alive
