Nightmare/Loved Ones
Poetry By: Bazal Morani
Sleeping soundly you wake to the soft touch of your mother
“It’s 11:30 PM sweetheart, with you I will say a quick prayer”
A massage while hearing her mumble as you are half asleep
Suddenly, into your torso, her nails start to cut deep
You try to fight her but to no avail
She simply wants to kill you and will not fail
You wake with a start to realize it is only a dream
But then dad comes in to overdose you on pills and you cannot scream
Facing you is a mirrored image of yourself laying next to you
“I will take your place when you’re dead and there is nothing you can do”
As her sharp teeth come at you, you awaken once more
Only to find your dad outside your door
This time it must be real as your dead mother is not around
Instead it is your stepmother upset to be awoken and frowns
This time things seem normal as dad tells you about his day
It is relieving to know that even his jokes are the same
But that he quickly slits your throat as you awaken once more
This time you are crying and frightened and left unsure
You check to see if your room looks familiar not wanting it to be another dream
You call your dad frightened but start hallucinating and scream
You are still in your room but also in the back of a car
Your dad is driving with a gun in his hand you’ve driven quite far
But he is still on the phone with you as you beg him to let you go
Which dad is real, you don’t know
You say you will do better, be the daughter he wishes you were
But the caring dad on the phone is gone and now you will burn
Into an isolated clearing you are brought to be shot and burned
You wake up once more feeling scared and concerned
Will this nightmare ever end and how will you ever know if you’re awake
I hope you are now, if nothing else, then for your own sake
