Everything obeys ageless gravity
Exhausted leaves and the curtain of night
Darkness encourages depravity
But it can be a friend, protecting sight
From the vice and folly of other men

As beauty withers and bonds are broken

The autumnal darkness smells like a page
Of a favorite novel, warm and true
A familiar comfort in one’s dotage
A story that stays the same, unlike you
Honor the advent of autumnal night
What’s dark allows us to see what is bright
