Night Came Fast

I just was not ready this soon for it

Night Came Fast

The day moved out in silence

Without a single sound

I looked up for a moment

And darkness gathered round

The sky turned soft and distant

The light began to fade

Hours I thought were waiting

Had quietly slipped away

I watched the evening settle

Across the fading glass

The afternoon felt endless

Then night arrived too fast

The quiet filled the corners

And slowed the busy air

The world seemed less demanding

With shadows everywhere

Streetlights began their glowing

A calm along the road

The rush of all the daytime

Released its heavy load

Thoughts rose with the stillness

Old memories appeared

Things hidden through the daytime

Felt closer and more clear

I stayed awake and listening

While time moved out of sight

The clock kept counting softly

Into the deeper night

Then standing at the window

With darkness gathered vast

I wondered where the day had gone

And why night came so fast.
