Never Be Small Again

There lies a subtle anger

Securely in my chest

With it comes a danger

Seeping, soaking, worming its way in

A red, hot fury untapped and untouched

Ruthlessly reminding me of the years I hid

Eighteen years I was alive

Alive isn’t quite living

Like in the moments before a sunrise

A watching world waiting with bated breath

As a warm, orange glow crawls over the world

Reassuring us of the one constant in life

But I am not the sun

Maybe I am the moon

A card for journeys, reversed, deception

Still illuminated on the surface

The luster of yellow phases radiating outwards

Reminding that past progress is still progress

Frustration melts away

Pride roots deep

Tendrils tempt a bouquet

Tending to self love, weeding insecurity

As tender, green buds blossom into promise

I bloom while I grow, happily

To the tips of my toes

It pushes, yearns

Daring me to explode

My internal universe sown from hope

A hue of inky blue so dark it brushes constellations

Making space, making myself my home

With weighted words spoken

A resounding declaration

‘Never be small again’

Verity has a fondness for frightening shallow minds

Who paint indigo bruises with stones in hand and mouth

But they are merely pitied by my pride

surreal poetry
