"Echo and Narcissus" by John William Waterhouse (1903)

Have you heard the story

of Narcissus & Echo?

Self-obsessive, consuming

Love to feed the Ego.

We remember Narcissus on riverbeds-

A pretty flower that needs constant watering.

But we forget Echo’s nourishing

With Love in the shadows.

How her words were ripped from her,

Diminished, abandoned, alone.

Enabling: she devotes,

Nurtures, and sacrifices herself.

He is insatiable: he belligerently

Consumes and devastates.

What a world to live in

As Narcissus & Echo.

My sweet flower, if I could

I would push you to drown in your vanity.
