An Ekphrastic Sonnet

Jean Delville, "The Idol of Perversity," 1891

I enter your temple with trembling dread

Your priests and priestesses glower at me;

Their language does strange things to my poor head

The sound, not the sense, solves a mystery

Your strange eyes penetrate my flimsy mask

Discerning the filthy secret I keep

Hiding my desires is quite a task

The truth is that I’m an exotic creep

Before your altar I feel naked, free

You judge and condemn the pretense, I know

Concealing my pungent perversity

Deserves your disdain; I am abject, low

In your name, my secret will be revealed:

By lust for you, goddess, my fate is sealed

Ekphrastic
