My Santa with Claws

Heartbreak during the holidays hits different

By Rose Akweley Elikplim Nyanyo-NmaiPublished 9 months ago 1 min read

Everyone talks about "cuffing season" in November, but nobody talks about the clearing out in December. Having to let go of an ornament when everyone is hanging decorations. I wrote this piece after realising that sometimes the gifts we expect can turn out to be lessons instead.

January gave me hope

Checked in in May

Things were looking good

November promised me a future

I thought I had the year in the bag.

But December?

It arrives with a slash across my chest

A crimson fountain gushes

Smelling like heartbreak and disappointment

Xavier hung up the phone

After dropping three words

We. Are. Over!

I had him down as my Father Christmas

But I guess he's just a Santa with Claws.
