My Road Ends at the Door

An uncertain fate after a call

“We need you to come in.”

No reason, no answers to my questions

Just two steps from the door now

Standing somewhere outside time

My past clear and comforting

The time before the call

My future now uncertain

All my plans foggy

My dreams suddenly out of reach

I’m caught in the purgatory of the present

Everything hinging on the turn of door knob

Soft music plays, somehow soothing, yet foreboding

A few strange faces glance up

Waiting to overhear my fate

Hoping to bide time before they hear their own

Cold, white tile with tiny blue flecks

Making my final steps echo in front of the door

The tiny hallway with just five doors

Now seems infinite, no where for me to run

There’s no choice now

Just one more step, a twist of a knob

Then all will be made clear

I don’t want to know, my mind screams

Then, the mahogany door slowly opens

No turning back now

My road’s led to this for better or worse.
