My people My home

A breath of air

I take a deep breath, counting seconds at a particular rhythm

Closing my eyes so my palpitations can stop chocking me

I visualize mother and me drinking tea,

Having a conversation about everything and anything.

The sound of her voice instantly making me feel safe

momentarily I forget we live thousands of miles apart

Giving me a chance to think straight and regain my composure

She is my safe place, she is home.

***

That ecstatic feeling you get from a positive outcome or

the sad sensation from unfortunate news

Home is the people I am accountable to both in celebration and disgrace.

the people I share the bad and good news with

the very people I am not afraid to be myself around.

Be it a happy dance, scream annoyingly loud, or crying

Just because it’s how we turn up for each other

without holding back any emotion.

***

Home is where I feel most safe and accepted

Home is who I love and who loves me right back unconditionally

I hope I feel at home to those that are home to me.
