My Path in the Rain

I didn't feel the downpour

until my clothes were fully soaked.

I should've heard or felt it earlier,

but my brain was so busy

trying to cope with what you said

that my senses had shut off.

I stopped walking.

Where was I? Where did I leave from?

Well, I guess it didn't matter.

You had told me not to come back,

so the only place to go was

wherever my feet led me.

Inhale. Hold. Exhale.

I shuffled my feet into a wider stance

and set my vision to panoramic,

not focusing on anything

but taking the whole world in at once.

Good. Come back to reality.

Raindrops pattered on my head and shoulders,

rolling down my chest and back and legs

until they reached my socks and shoes.

Deep breaths. You can't tell me I'm worthless. No!

A single ray of light pierced through the rain

and into my desperate, longing soul.

I reached out to grasp not the light,

but the hope of moving forward,

of finding my value that already existed.

Yes, this rain was washing me clean,

washing me free of the years

of being told I hadn't earned my worth.

I was free. Worthy.

And I could find my own path

in the rain.
