My Old Corgi Mix

The twilight of her years are fast approaching. This is the story of how this old corgi mix came to us.

My old corgi mix

on the floor.

Chest heaving,

as she snores.

***

Her long life

nears an end,

for she barely moves

with the grace

and speed

she once had.

***

My old corgi mix,

my desert doggy,

survived captivity

and the coyotes

to emerge on a parched

Acre of land,

wandering about

looking for a home

that was better

than the last.

***

So she came to us

one fateful morning.

We didn’t find her.

She found us.

under the hot sun

in a desert land.

***

A year old

and too much seen

and heard.

My old corgi mix

lived a life

harsh and steep.

***

She came home with us

and she stayed.

A stable home for once!

But her fear engrained.

***

When petted too hard,

she snapped back hard

She growled

and flashed those fangs

with an anger in her eyes.

***

Children feared her.

Cats ran away.

***

Even big dogs

wanted nothing to do

With her snappy ways.

***

But left alone,

for too long

she whined and wailed

and dug holes in doors

And screens.

***

Don’t put her in cages.

That’s a no!

She bit and thrashed

The bars and tore through

for fear of being locked in

with the  unknown demons of her past.

***

She hated the outdoors

and had to be pushed out.

She wouldn’t budge.

She wouldn’t obey.

***

She wanted to belong

with the humans inside.

For loneliness was

my old corgi mix’s weakness.

***

Still, she guarded us

her parents,

her sibling our boys,

And the other cats and dogs.

***

She always slept nearby

under the bed

or on top of the bed

and between us.

***

Or cuddled up

By our legs

Or on our laps.

***

My old corgi mix

was  complex.

Prone to fear

of lightning and thunder

But up to challenge the beasts

Bigger than her.

***

Now, my old corgi mix.

She sleeps on the floor

And barely gets up.

Arthritis makes it tough

Age doesn’t care.

***

She nears the end,

despite being with us

through thick and thin.

***

She’s quiet now.

She’s calm as well.

Still…

***

My old corgi mix

will depart soon.

A matter of when

Not a matter of if.

***

Yet, when I see her now,

my old corgi mix,

she’s at peace

even as age

Doesn’t take a break.
