My... Monsters

From Darkness to Light

There are monsters

That don’t live under beds

Behind doors

Under stairs

They do not creep

From out of closets

When I, nestled

Beneath piles of blankets

Eyes closed tight

I tremble

And pretend to sleep

Some monsters

Live down the hall

Creeping like ghosts

In dark of night

Turning doorknobs

Like knives

Twisting dreams

To nightmares

Flesh and blood

Kin and kindred

My…

My monster

Enters slowly

Slinking like a snake

While eyes closed

Trembling

I pretend to sleep

Other monsters

Hide their horns

Smiling demons

 Behind angel masks

Whispering lies laced with honey

Sheep-skinned wolves

Gifting golden rings

And Glittering rocks

My chosen one

Heart and hand

My…

Enters stormy

Like the raging sea

As I close black eyes

Trembling

And pretend to sleep

The worst monsters though

Live in my head

Steal my words

Freeze my bones

Chain me to the others

They…

Who will not be named

My…

My…

Monsters

Who, named

May be called back

Afraid

I shrink into shadow

Silenced

Though my screams

Echo in my mind

Invisible

As the bruises

I try to hide

Clenching eyes tight shut

Trembling

And fall into sleep

All monsters

Can be robbed of power

Forced into the light

Exposed

Unmasked

I locked the door

Told my story

Hushed the voices

Calmed the screams

Took back control

I close my eyes

Without trembling

And sleep in peace.
