My Goal For The Future
If only

Life hasn’t been easy — no it’s been fucken tough!
Fight after fight after fight,
Internal battles, external battles, covert battles,
Consistently!
**
There were days I didn’t think I’d survive,
Surprise not always on my side,
Betrayals when I least expected them,
Leaving me totally unprepared.
**
But I survived, I rose to the occasion every single time,
Fought my demons, fought others’ demons,
Destroyed my soul; pieced it back together,
And soldiered on.
**
I’m armoured with a tough exterior, built from the hardest of wins,
My inner self stands tall and fast, a reckoning,
One of my biggest achievements is my strength, my resilience,
My ability to face my fears head on.
**
But, it may just surprise you to learn,
I dream of never again being told I’m strong,
Of never having to rely solely upon my strength to survive,
Which I’ve had to do all along.
**
I dream of support, a helping hand,
Of others wearing the mantle for awhile,
I’m tired, I’m exhausted,
Over the fight, over standing alone as I beat this thing called life.
**
One day, I’m hoping for one day,
Where I can stop and rest for a space in time,
Where someone else can wear that hero’s cape and save my day,
But I fear I’m just a little too late.
About the Creator
Colleen Millsteed
My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
