My Final Task
Living to Serve
My Final Task
I sit across from them every day of my life,
This person, this creation, a person without strife.
Kind words always spoken with a pinch of compassion,
Fills my days with hope and positive reactions.
It wasn’t supposed to have been this way,
Me seeing them each and every day.
But to my satisfaction and some unseen plan,
They’re my responsibility to do the best that I can.
Pencil measurements marked upon the wall,
Started when they very young and not very tall.
One by one the days have passed by,
My ole my how time does fly.
Grade school classes, days of imagination,
Middle school classes, days for fanciful creation.
Now that each high school day passes by,
I breathe my deepest breaths and sometimes let out a sigh.
Not knowing the tomorrows nor the content of each,
I always remember to hug them, place a kiss upon their cheek.
For with the passing of each glorious memorable day,
I must endeavor to jot something down, something pleasant to say.
It’s for the days when I’m no longer walking beside,
I pen each thought, each filled with love that will always abide.
From day-to-day and year-to-year, each word resounding is true,
I’ve given my life for many, but I’ve saved the best of me for you.
For Astrid.
