My Favorite Song

By: Paige Fane

My favorite song has the most beautiful melody I’ve ever heard and I wish to God it didn’t

I wish it was a trendy song the radio overplays until it eventually made me not want to get out of the car because it was still playing

I wish it would wear off and get old once a new trendy song starts playing

I wish it made me dance around my room in my underwear like a maniac and find myself abruptly singing it in the grocery store

I wish I could just download it on iTunes and play it all day long

Instead, my favorite song makes me want to conquer the most difficult trail on the highest mountain and travel to the deepest depths of the Earth to slay dragons hidden underneath

My favorite song makes me opens me up, makes me vulnerable and emotional

It makes me feel like I could do everything and nothing as long as it’s still playing

It fills my soul like sunlight filling an empty room every time it plays, like I haven’t heard it a million times before

It has absolutely perfect rhythm, tempo, and cadence to fit my every mood

Even when it stops playing, it stays with me at all times

I want to curl up with it every night, and wake up to it every morning

I want to meet its parents, and for it to meet mine

I want us to tell each other stories as it keeps me safe in its handsomely crafted melodies, sharing eternity in a peaceful bliss

But somehow I lost it halfway up the side of the mountain, or in the middle of the dragon’s fire

Its beautifully forged rhythms still faintly repeated themselves in my mind as I fought through the stone and fire to find the melody again

I felt mad as I climbed faster and yielded my sword with all the strength I had to protect my beautiful melody

I wasn’t ready to lose my favorite song

I never got to meet its parents, or curl up with it at night

l didn’t get to tell it my stories, or hear theirs

I’ll never know how it became so beautiful

Or love it the way I wanted to

There was no peace, there was no bliss. Just this terrible faint memory of all that I missed

And now I’m at the top of the mountain, sitting on the dragon’s belly, disconcerted and half elated mentally fighting for the beautiful melody I once knew, as a less interesting song forces its way in and puts itself on repeat

It will never be my favorite

No other song will be my favorite

My favorite song has the most beautiful melody I’ve ever heard and I wish to God it didn’t
