My Dream

Flooding

By Dan R FowlerPublished about a year ago 1 min read

My Dream

Through slumbering eyes pinched together to see,

Came a vision of the unexpected approaching me.

Off in the distance and beyond the treeline,

Arose sounds of destruction, washing over the incline.

Frantic and fearful, the people began to hide,

From events that were coming, no turning them aside.

Dark rain clouds churned and hung heavily overhead,

Dipping down from time to time filling all with dread.

Standing and watching the crowds as they ran,

Reminded me of cloudbursts or a failed earthen dam.

Swirling and lapping at the feet of those who stood,

Rising waters warning people to run as they should.

The first levee gave way buckling under the pressure,

People watching fearful and panicking without measure.

What was coming was without restraint or control,

And would take all the people both young and old.

Streets soon flooded, waters rushing waist-high,

Many knew it was their time, their time to die.

Cries for help were silenced by the churning torrents,

Taking pets and children and eventually the parents.

Gurgling gutters overwhelmed with the sludge,

Trapped those remaining filling homes with mud.

A storm is coming it had often been said,

But no one paid attention, plugging their ears instead.

When all was lost and screams no longer heard,

No whispers of, “I told you so” or prayerful words afforded,

As foretold by many in a place filled with plenty,

The flooding and devastation left everything empty.
