My City Dreams
An inspired poem about my hometown NYC
I wonder if the city I love,
could be like the city in my dreams,
where the sun always shines
and the streets are paved with marble,
where there are no worries -
but always smiling faces.
*
I wonder but I also know,
that my city is far from perfect,
there are days it seems magical
and days when it is gray and ordinary,
people seem uncaring,
shouldering their worries
and children run in dirty streets.
*
But oh, to have my city,
look like no other,
with fountains splashing colored rainbows
and parks emerald green,
avenues and boulevards lined with trees
and streets sparkling clean after the rain -
stretching for miles before me.
*
Where gas fumes quickly rise above
and the air has a scent all its own,
of street food and tiny shops,
where there are neighborhoods,
where I can always wear a smile
and people answer in kind,
where children play in playgrounds,
that look like Alice’s wonderland
and life is just really grand.
*
But the city in my dreams,
is but a fantasy,
in reality my city is always filled with adventure,
where the good and the bad mingle,
where there are daytime worries
and joyful nights,
when the neon lights are so very bright
and people trip the light fantastic.
*
My city dreams entertain me
and I can see sailing ships in the harbor,
to me my city will always be a dream,
no matter what the reality,
for I know the truth,
I am the dream -
my city dreams.
