Mosaic by Frances Guzman

A poem of features of mine that I have inherited from loved ones both new and old, lost and found.

I am made up of my grandmother’s emerald eyes

Those that shine brighter than any harvested gemstone

Gorgeous golden gardens

Rich, radiant retinas

Everlasting woodlands

Experiences everything, everywhere

Never static, forever dynamic

Within my small frame, I harbor my sister’s extensive ego

The one which convinces me that I am invincible, not invisible

Ready to take on anything

Even my deepest fears

Dare I say, I am unstoppable

I hold my breath while going under bridges as if it were

The crushing weight of the ocean above me because

The newfound college friend next to me does the same

But not everything turns out alright

Look, this is the truth of life

Unless you come to terms with it

Everything will remain feeble, useless

There is a joke that I have taken too far

And now I hate otters in spite of my ex

Being between places and people

Really begins to take a toll

Only you can reclaim your life

Win over yourself first

Next, everything else will follow
